Javier Aguirre: "We burned our bridges and it worked"

The manager spoke to the media after our win against Valencia CF

Javier Aguirre spoke to the media after our 2-1 win at Valencia CF. We came from a goal behind to return to winning ways as Vedat Muriqi and Kang-In Lee’s goals gave us a 2-1 victory at the Mestalla. Find out what the boss had to say below:

On the match…

"The key to the game was the change of system and the substitutes. Of course, we were in high spirits. We had lost to Barça, Real Sociedad and Sevilla I wouldn't say unfairly, but it was painful. Despite that, the team showed its mettle. Today, despite losing, they did not lose their temper. They didn't lose their enthusiasm and were rewarded in the end.”

On Muriqi…

"I already said that the two-match suspension would be good for him to moderate his character and not be so naïve in the penalty area. Provocations exist in football because they are part of the game. He understood that it was too much punishment but it was good for him to see things from the outside. Today he had a very complete game.”

On Dani and Amath…

"Dani and Amath are different stories. Dani has been suffering because of his game. He himself is not happy. He feels he can give more. Amath is another story since he had surgery. He is different player - he's mischievous. The surgery was wonderful for him.”

On the second half…

"Valencia is very difficult at home – that’s how it looked after the goal. We burned our bridges and it worked. If they had equalised, it would have been fair. During the first half, they put us in our area and our goalkeeper made great saves. I think that a draw would have been fair."

"We kept our emotional balance until the end of the game - that was the key to the match.”
