Javier Aguirre: ‘When we were at our best we conceded’

The boss reflected on our 1-1 draw with RCD Espanyol

Javier Aguirre was on post-match media duties after our 1-1 draw with RCD Espanyol. Vedat Muriqi gave us the lead after the break before José Carlos Lazo equalised in the 70th minute. We had a late claim for a penalty turned away from the referee which resulted in red cards for both Aguirre and Pablo Maffeo. Find out what the boss had to say below:

On the match...

"The truth is that in the first half we lacked depth. We moved the ball well and positioned ourselves well, but we lacked things in the last third to put the opposition in trouble. Then, in the second half, we came out strong, plugged in, we had chances and when we were at our best, we conceded that unfortunate goal. I think the lad wanted to cross, hit it with his left foot and put it in at the far post – it happens in football.”

On the penalty claim...

"We still don't understand when the VAR is supposed to come in - the rest is the least of it. That's my only doubt. Today it's clear that the people up there weren't very insistent. The referee is there to judge what he sees and he saw that it was not a penalty. If he is not told otherwise, he reaffirms his decision. We have to respect it.

On the fans...

"Spectacular. I really only have words of gratefulness. They carry us in their arms. They were cheering the whole game. It's fantastic, I hope this sort of relationship lasts a long time."
