Adrián Fuentes: "I am facing this as an important challenge"

Our new player outlined his ambition for the future in his first interview since joining

Our new signing Adrián Fuentes is ready to get work.

Find out what the striker had to say ahead of the new season about his arrival on the island.

How have you found these last few days with the negotiations and finalising the transfer?

“They’ve been very stressful but also very exciting – above all, I’m really looking forward to it.”

What was the main factor that convinced you to take the plunge and sign for RCD Mallorca?

“I think there were many factors, beyond just the location or the part of Spain. Above all, the fantastic club it is, its history, its structure… I think it’s a very big club in Spain, and it’s been proving that over the last few seasons. And that’s more than enough reason to seriously believe this could be the place where I can do well.”

How would you describe yourself as a player?

“I always try to be humble. I’d describe myself as a very physical player, but it’s true that I’m no slouch with the ball either; I try to do my best technically, within the limits of my abilities – though I reckon my physical attributes are what stand out the most.”

Competition within the squad.

“I’ve always said it: competition has always pushed all teams to keep their players at the highest level, because I believe competition is healthy. And I see it as a major challenge, because I think it will help us take that little leap forward we’re aiming for – which is for each and every one of us to improve.”

What do you think of Luis García as a manager?

“I think he’s a manager with a wealth of experience, and he’s a former professional footballer too. Above all, I can relate to him a lot based on what I know from last season – how his team, Las Palmas, played. I see it as a very entertaining, very aggressive, very lively style of football, and I think that’s a good starting point.”

Have you spoken to the manager yet? What did he tell you?

“Yes, I had a phone conversation with him, during which he welcomed me. And, above all, he tried to help me, to explain a little about the plan for the season, which wasn’t much different from what I’d been thinking – namely, the way Las Palmas play. And I think he’s a manager who’s going to help us all a great deal.”

Were you already familiar with the RCD Mallorca supporters? What do you expect from them?

“It’s true that I’ve never been to Mallorca; this will be my first time. But I have watched plenty of La Liga matches over the last few years, including some involving Mallorca, and I get the sense that they’re a very passionate set of supporters who are also demanding – as you’d expect. That’s good for both the club and the players; it means we can never let our guard down, and we always have to give our all in every match and every training session. And it’s important for our development.”

What personal goals have you set yourself for this season?

“To try and help the team as much as possible. If I can do that by scoring goals, obviously, all the better, but if that’s not enough on its own, then through hard work, effort, sacrifice and humility.”
