Pablo Torre, Luis García, Arnau Tenas and Alex Sala were on post-match media duties as we beat Real Valladolid 2-0 in our opening game of the season. Find out what they had to say below:
Pablo Torre:
On the game: I’m really pleased to have picked up three points. They came out with a lot of energy. We struggled to create those spaces in the first half; they had very physical central midfielders and we were finding it a bit difficult to play through the middle. Then, in the second half, they were more tired and the game opened up a bit more; I think that’s when we found our rhythm. I’m particularly pleased with the win and also with the goal.
We need to keep going in this vein, but there are lots of things we need to work on because we can play much better, as we’ve shown in pre-season.
On the first goal: I was absolutely delighted. I’d been looking to score that goal for a long time; I’ve practised it a lot in training and, in the end, all that practice paid off – I’m really happy.
Luis Garcia:
On the game:
Yes, it’s always important to pick up wins at home, especially the first match when you’re returning to the top flight or coming down from the top flight – it’s always a tough one, it’s not easy. We managed to hold our own at times when we weren’t at our best, but in the end it was a deserved victory; the team worked very well and we managed to pick up the first three points.
It’s crucial that people realise we have to place the utmost importance on set-piece situations, both in defence and attack. As for some of those goals – I’ve said this to a team-mate before – I think our supporters have been incredible, cheering the team on and backing us when we needed it most. They didn’t get nervous, and a large part of this victory is down to that support from our fans.
It’s vital for us that the players on the bench – who got their chance today, but will surely have opportunities to make the starting eleven – are part of the team. We have to be a complete team, and to be a complete team we need everyone’s commitment. Today, the players who came off the bench – and not just those who came on, but also those who didn’t – gave their all, and that’s the only way we can achieve our objectives. The goal is a shared one; it belongs to everyone. Everyone is important – it’s not that the starting eleven are more important than those on the bench.
Arnau Tenas:
On the game:
Yes, there’s no better way to start LaLiga – at home, in front of our fans, with three points and a clean sheet. I think the match really lived up to the atmosphere, and well, first of all I’d like to congratulate my team-mates on the performance they put in. They never stopped believing, which is exactly what we’ll need throughout the season, and that’s it – I’m very happy.
Yes, I think we went from strength to strength. It’s true that the goal opened the match up for us a bit in that respect. After that, we were able to show the sort of football we play, the football we’re capable of, the football we train for. And the second half might have been a bit easier, but then again, every match this year will be a tough one. We need everyone available, and above all our Mallorcan players.
Well, to be honest, Pablo Torre is a brilliant shooter – I’ve known him for many years. We’ve played together for ages; I know the power behind his shot, and when I saw the ball go in, I thought, ‘Goal!’ And then, the way I celebrated – well, you must have seen that. I’m absolutely delighted for him; he’s a well-balanced person and a top-class player who can contribute so much to us this year. And well, it was a goal that really breathed new life into us, to be honest.
Alex Sala:
On the game:
I’m very happy. I think it was important for the team to start LaLiga with a home win. We’re happy, but we’re already looking ahead to next week and focusing on the next match. Set-pieces are another aspect of the game and we’re handling them well so far. I think it’s also important to be strong from set-pieces. They’ll earn us a lot of points and let’s hope it continues that way. Yes, I’m pleased with the win. I think it’s great; it’s good for everyone to start with a win here at home. When we play at home, we need to feel stronger, and that’s how it was today. And I hope it’ll be like that in every match.
