Match report: Mallorca 1 - Girona 0

Mallorca got their first victory in the current league after beating 1-0 Girona with a goal scored by Culio. These three points give so much oxygen a team that was bottom of the table at the beginning of the game.

Girona have yet to win away from Montilivi and today were not able to convert, which was their strength to date.

The Balearic side got the lead in the 21th minute with a freekick taken by Juan Culio, which after a lucky deflection from Longo ended inside Girona’s goal.

It was Mallorca’s second goal of the championship and it tasted like glory especially as Girona were not able to convert any of what they created.

Mallorca showed the virtues and mistakes from previous matchdays. Their game was neat and direct.

Girona fielded an ambitious XI with only three defenders – Alcala, Juanpe and Kiko Olivas – which showed an attacking vocation, with no cigar.

Cifuentes in the 15th minute did not connect well with the ball after a superb counter, it was the clearest chance of the first half where both teams were forced to make substitutions to cover for muscular injuries. On the one hand Kiko Olivas from Girona, on the other Thierry Moutinho from Mallorca. The first was subbed by Jonas Ramalho and the latter one by Pol Roige.

After the break, Mallorca were closer to scoring the second than Girona to get their first and draw the game.

Brandon Thomas sent too wide in the 66th minute a nice pass when was free of mark. He could have enlarge the gap and practically seal the game. A little after, the young talent was subbed by Oscar Diaz in the 75th minute. The Girona side did try everything before the final whistle but stumbled with an ordered and outgoing defensive.
