Lucas Bergström: “I am very happy to be here"

The young goalkeeper discussed his move to the island for the first time with club media

Lucas Bergström ya es nuevo futbolista del RCD Mallorca. El joven finlandés será uno de los guardianes de la portería bermellona y estas han sido sus primeras palabras como mallorquinista.

How do you feel about joining RCD Mallorca and taking this step in your career?

I am very excited. I've just left Chelsea and I'm very happy to be here and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, getting started and seeing how far we can take this club.

You spent your formative years at Chelsea's academy, how has that experience influenced you as a goalkeeper and as a person?

I was there for almost seven years, I moved there when I was 16. I went through the academy and the last two seasons I was in the first team. It's definitely a very important part of my life and it will always be a special place for me. There are a lot of people I worked with for a long time and who helped me to improve.

You are still very young at only 22, but you have already trained and competed at a high level. What would you say are your main strengths on the pitch?

I am very tall. People will probably notice that soon. I'm 2.05 and I like being a big goalkeeper, coming out, catching crosses and dominating the box and making it difficult for opponents to get chances to finish.

Have you had a chance to talk to the coaching staff or your new teammates yet? What has been your first impression of the club and the atmosphere here?

Not yet... Yesterday I met Pablo [Torre], who also signed a day ago, so he's the only one I've met. I'm looking forward to seeing him tomorrow.

Spanish football has a unique style, is there any aspect of the game here that you are particularly excited about adapting to?

I think it's more possession-based football, but I'm really excited to learn about it, improve and see how we play here. It probably has to do with aggressive positioning, trying to cover a lot of space and making it difficult for opponents to get into finishing positions, covering space and area.

How would you describe your style of play and is there a goalkeeper you look up to or draw inspiration from?

I don't have one goalkeeper as a reference. I look at goalkeepers in general and try to see what their strengths are on the pitch and try to imitate that. But there is no one goalkeeper that I look up to in that way.

What message would you like to share with the fans who are looking forward to seeing you in goal at Son Moix?

I hope they give me a warm welcome and I will give my all for this club.
