Joan Sastre: ‘We were very excited to get back to training’

The right back spoke to journalists via a video press conference following our return to work at Ciudad Deportiva Antonio Asensio

Joan Sastre says he and his team-mates were desperate to get back onto the pitch following our return to full training.

While the resumption has been restricted to individual sessions in accordance with regulations outlined by La Liga and Consejo Superior de Deportes, the right back believes a return to normality is heading in the right direction.

“We were very excited to get back training, whether is was individually in in groups,” he told journalists during a virtual press conference. “Now we have to be calm. Health has to come first, but after that, the important thing for us was being able to return. Us footballers need to train and be on the pitch. It’s clear that the situation is totally different, but we have many security measures in place and are very responsible.

‘We've been training day-to-day from home, but we’ve not lowered our level of training. It’s certain that its not the same thing working from home, but the return us found all of us very well and we’re prepared for whatever comes. The strangest thing was not being able to have contact with team-mates, but the foremost thing was to be responsible.”

While discussions between La Liga and Consejo Superior de Deportes continue regarding a possible recommencement of competitive football, Sastre says the squad want to fight for their place in the division on merit.

“It’s clear to us that, when we’re able to play, we want be able to do it winning on the pitch," he continued. "We’re professionals and we want to compete and be able to show that we want to stay in the top division.”
