On Wednesday, the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix hosted the First Sport and Women’s Forum, which was attended by a number of prominent female figures from the world of sport. The event was divided into three panel discussions, during which various topics were discussed and examined.
The first focused on the role of institutions in women’s football in terms of governance, regulation, investment and strategy, and what Spanish and English football can learn from one another.
Participants included the Director of Women’s Football at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Reyes Bellver; the Director of Women’s Football at the English Football Association, Sue Day; the Vice-President of Liga F and Director of Atlético de Madrid Women’s Team, Lola Romero; and the President of the Balearic Islands Football Federation (FFIB), Jordi Horrach.
The second panel focused on the professional reality of women’s sport through the testimonies of two prominent Mallorcan athletes: basketball player Alba Torrens and sailor Paula Barceló, as well as personal trainer María Rosich. All spoke about the challenges of elite sport and the opportunities in women’s sport.
Finally, the third round-table discussion featured the FFIB’s vice-president, María de la Paz Cerdá; FC Viktoria Berlin’s Head of Brand and Communications, Laura Galmés, and RCD Mallorca’s Director of Youth Football, Toni Gelabert, to discuss youth football and the development of the women’s brand through topics such as the youth academy, growth, identity, social impact and the future of women’s football.
RCD Mallorca’s Head of Communications, Héctor Martín, chaired the three round-table discussions, whilst the club’s Corporate CEO, Alfonso Díaz, kicked off the event with a speech in which he highlighted the “pride” the club takes in hosting a forum such as this.
He also noted that women’s sport is “at a pivotal moment” and requires “more resources, visibility, infrastructure and sustained commitment” from those involved in the sport. In this regard, Díaz explained that the club has sought to “be part of this momentum with a sustainable project and an appropriate structure”, such as the launch of RCD Mallorca Women’s, which will progress and grow over time, starting with a U12 8-a-side team that has competed during the 2025/26 season.
For her part, the Regional Minister for Labour, the Civil Service and Social Dialogue, Catalina Teresa Cabrer, said, among other things, that “it is a privilege to have some of the leading figures in Balearic sport here with us today”. Figures who, according to Cabrer, serve as role models and sources of inspiration.
This valuable forum, which has served to highlight the role of women in sport, create spaces for reflection and raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities currently facing women’s sport, took place just two days before the senior women’s football team faces England at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix. An important qualifying match for the 2027 World Cup, in which up to four Mallorcan players will feature: Cata Coll, Patri Guijarro, Mariona Caldentey and Lucía Corrales.
