Match report: Real Mallorca 1 AD Alcorcon 0

Reds seal last-gasp victory in a three-penalty thriller at the Iberostar after dominating most of the game

Mallorca have made it three on their victory box counter on the table. It has been thanks to a 1-0 victory facing Alcorcon after Lago Junior converted a penalty in the 75th minute of the second half. The game will be remembered for the three penalties awarded by the Asturian referee Gonzalez Fuertes. Two of the penalties, one on each half, were stopped by Marko Dmitrovic and Jesus Cabrero after Juan Emanuel Culio and David Rodriguez stepped up and missed. Luckily for the islanders, Lago took the third one and made no mistake as he secured the three points to stay at home in a crucial victory for the Majorcan.

Alcorcon, for the second time managed by Julio Velazquez, after replacing the departing Cosmin Contra, is thus beaten for fifth time this season and watch the world crumble as they drown deeper in the table after this misery defeat at the Balearics.

The game was a poor one in the first 45 minutes. After the break into the second half, apart from the penalties, there were shots on the posts and one man sent off, Manuel from Alcorcon (80th minute).

The Mediterranean team could have got the advantage early into the second half (8th minute), but the free-kick from Juan Culio was grabbed by Marko Dmitrovic in the air.

Mallorca had the ball and control of it, but missed the last pass in the final yards. Only Lago represented a real danger to the capital team, who was more concerned with defending than with attacking.

As a matter of fact, the Madrid outfit barely created disquiet to the goal kept by Cabrero and their only mission was to secure a clean sheet.

In the second half, Alcorcon was more determined to score and that change of mentality allowed the Madrid army to push forward. That showed in the 48th minute when LaLiga123 most prolific current striker David Rodriguez made Cabrero stretch to a great extent in a brilliant save.

Vazquez looked for more sharpness up front and changed midfielder Juan Rodriguez for bomber Dejan Lekic. The first consequence from the substitution was the shot taken by Lago Junior thatn Dmitrovic thumbed away to a corner. The away keeper was their best man.

Short after (64th minute), Eduard Campabadal stroke the post and Joan Oriol the top corner crossbar, two actions by the Majorcan side-backs that left no doubt on the clear intention to go for the game by the Reds.

It was high time Mallorca deserve to take a goal for the occasions seen, but Alcorcon did not make it easy for the Reds and forced a penalty (69th minute) that David Rodriguez squandered or rather was touched wide by Cabrero, it a specular action.

The penatly missed by the yellow team was key to the game because minutes after (in the 80th), Manuel was sent off and their options to get a point were fading. Despite being one man down, the squad managed by Julio Velazquez kept trying non-stop.

Mallorca wound up defending with five men after Raillo replaced Lago Junior in the 88th minute in order to cement their their all-important victory that propels them further into safety and away from the fire of the last four.
