Match report: Real Madrid 6-1 RCD Mallorca

We fall to a disappointing defeat in the capital on Matchday Six

We suffered a disappointing 6-1 defeat against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Luis García Plaza made several changes to the side which drew 0-0 to Villarreal three days prior. Academy graduate Josep Gayá was handed his senior debut, while Kang-In Lee and Rodrigo Battaglia were handed their first starts with their new clubs. Aleix Febas and Lago Junior were also among the starting XI for the first time this season.

We couldn’t have wished for a worse start as Karim Benzema opened the scoring after just two minutes having capitalised on a defensive error.

The early setback served as a wake-up call as we began to settle into the fixture as Febas, Kubo and Hoppe combined in the final third, although it was Lago Junior who would come closest to levelling in the 20th minute with a strike which sailed over the bar.

Despite a positive spell of possession, former RCD Mallorca starlet Marco Asensio doubled the hosts’ lead by reacting first to a loose ball in the box four minutes later.

Kang-In Lee ensured we had an instant response when he broke forward from the restart, skipped past several challenges and drove the ball into the bottom corner less than a minute after Real Madrid had scored.

Our way back into the game was cut short four minutes later however, as Asensio struck again having raced through on goal to ensure we went into the break with a two-goal deficit to close.

The second half didn’t get off to the start we wanted as Asensio completed his hat-trick 10 minutes after the break with a curling effort from the edge of the box.

Our night went from bad to worse as first Benzema struck again with a deflected effort in the 78th minute before substitute Isco completed the scoring with six minutes to go.
