Match Report: RCD Mallorca 2-1 Rayo Vallecano

Abdón Prats’ late winner ensures we remain in the fight to beat the drop

Abdon Prats’ dramatic injury time winner pulled us out of the drop zone ahead of the final day of the season as we beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 at the Visit Mallorca Estadi.

Angél almost gave us an early lead in the fourth minute when he raced in behind and fired the wrong side of the post from a tough angle.

The visitors did not heed our early warning as eight minutes later Vedat Muriqi ghosted into the box unmarked to head home Jaume Costa’s cross to the far post.

Rayo Vallecano came close to levelling matters as we approached the break, but we went into half-time level with a big 45 minutes ahead of us.

We did not start the second half well, and with Manolo Reina having to be called into action on numerous occasions, Pathé Ciss levelled matters in the 60th minute when he headed home from a corner.

Time was ebbing away as we desperately searched for a winner, with Pablo Maffeo coming close with six minutes left on the clock and then Take Kubo whipping a free-kick the wrong side of the post in added time.

As our stay in LaLiga slipped away, Abdón Prats struck in the 92nd minute to send the Visit Mallorca Estadi into raptures with a composed finish.
