RCD Mallorca and the Fundació Reial Mallorca presented La Nostra Mar, this Wednesday at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, an initiative to contribute to the protection and conservation of the Mediterranean.

The president of RCD Mallorca, Andy Kohlberg, unveiled the initiative and announced his commitment to contributing to its development, while the Corporate CEO of RCD Mallorca, Alfonso Díaz, explained its main lines of action.

The Balearic Sea will be the starting point of the project, which will initially focus on four areas considered strategic due to their importance for biodiversity and their capacity to generate knowledge and promote conservation actions: marine forests, with special attention to Posidonia meadows; endangered species, especially sharks and rays; structural habitats, such as corals; and marine reserves.

Under the title "An extraordinary sea. The richness, beauty, and natural heritage of the Balearic Islands", the panel featured Ana Torres, Director General of the Natural Environment and Forest Management of the Government of the Balearic Islands; Biel Morey, marine biologist and vice president of Save the Med; Agustí Torres, president of Shark Med; and Gigi Torras, scientific coordinator of Arrels Marines.

During the conversation, the four experts shared different perspectives on the biodiversity of the Balearic Sea, from sharks, rays, and other marine species to gorgonians, corals, and Posidonia meadows, and highlighted the work being done to understand, research, and preserve these ecosystems.

The panel also reflected on the importance of understanding and valuing the natural heritage of the Mediterranean, as well as the need to continue generating knowledge and raising awareness to ensure its conservation for future generations.

A platform for collaboration and action

La Nostra Mar is envisioned as a platform open to collaboration and real action, which seeks to generate knowledge, involve society, and drive concrete measures for the conservation of the Mediterranean.

The initiative will be developed in alignment with the Balearic Sea Marine Conservation Plan and with a commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders connected to the sea.

Within this framework, Díaz highlighted the importance of working together with administrations, the scientific community, environmental organizations, local communities, and, in a special way, the fishing sector, whose knowledge, experience, and relationship with the sea are fundamental to moving toward effective and sustainable conservation.

“We do not want to impose a vision. We want to listen, collaborate, and build together”, Díaz pointed out.

Guardians of the Sea

The initiative also incorporates Guardians of the Sea, a program designed to facilitate the participation of individuals, businesses, and organizations in the protection of the Mediterranean.

Through this program, La Nostra Mar aims to create a community committed to the sea, capable of combining resources, knowledge, and a shared willingness to collaborate in order to drive actions with real and measurable impact.

La Nostra Mar will begin its journey in the Balearic Sea, with the aspiration that the knowledge and experiences generated can serve as inspiration and extend to other territories of the Mediterranean.

“Our goal is not only to protect the Mediterranean of today. We want to leave a better Mediterranean for tomorrow”, Díaz added.

The event concluded with an address by the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, followed by a gathering and networking session.
