Javier Aguirre: “The last two goals punished us”

The boss spoke to the media after our 4-1 defeat at Real Madrid

Javier Aguirre was on post-match press conference duties after our 4-1 defeat at Real Madrid. Goals from Fede Valverde and Antonio Rudiger, in addition to Rodrygo’s brace, gave the champions the three points after Vedat Muriqi had handed us the lead in the first half. Find out what the boss had to say below:

On the game…

"They are superior and sooner or later they were going to hit us. The idea was to keep the team together and hold on as long as possible. We knew we were going to have a couple of chances and in fact, we did.

“They are better in any scenario. There is individual talent, they play good football, and they are on a good run. Ancelotti is an extraordinary coach, so it's only logical that we lost.

"Going into the dressing room winning would have been like a mirage because they could have scored six or seven times. It was clear that it was going to be difficult to keep a clean sheet.

“After the goal, the team was in high spirits and with faith. Incredibly, we made it 1-2 and then nothing. The last two goals punished us a lot. Madrid was a fair winner - I have nothing to reproach my team for.”
