Football, barbecues and mallorquinismo

The RCD Mallorca veterans enjoyed an evening at the Ciudad Deportiva Antonio Asensio

Monday was a special day for the veterans of RCD Mallorca.

Once the weekly training session at one of the pitches at the Antonio Asensio Sports Complex was over, those present enjoyed a barbecue prepared by former player and current Mallorca B coach Gustavo Siviero.

It was an afternoon and evening of reunions, reminiscing about times gone by and, above all, Mallorquinismo. The president of the club's Veterans Association, Francisco “Chichi” Soler, explains that, ‘within the limits of availability’, they try to ‘keep this spirit alive’. ‘We get together, talk about Mallorca and see how the ball and the badge brought us all together,’ adds the former footballer.

The activities of the veterans, which include players who wore the red shirt at different stages, go beyond meeting at Son Bibiloni.

Organising tribute matches for former footballers or deceased individuals, attending the club's annual supporters' club dinners, going on trips and visiting nursing homes to cheer up the residents are some of the other activities carried out by the group.

First-team situation

When asked about RCD Mallorca's current sporting situation, former footballer Miguel Ángel Matamoros acknowledges that ‘the team has not started well’, although he remains ‘hopeful that things will improve’. In this situation, Matamoros says that there is no choice but to support the team every weekend ‘in whatever way necessary’.

For his part, Soler explains that ‘when there are defeats, doubts always arise,’ but he hopes that ‘they will prepare well during this 15-day break’ so that they can ‘turn the situation around.’
