Jan Virgili’s stunning opener was cancelled out by two goals from Toni Martinez as we suffered a 2-1 defeat at Deportivo Alaves.
Martin Demichelis continued with Vedat Muriqi as our central striker while David Lopez returned to central defence as Omar Mascarell pushed into central midfield.
We took the lead in the 18th minute when Jan Virgili cut in from the left flank, beat his marker and curled the ball into the far corner in spectacular style.
Leo Roman had to be at his best shortly after as the hosts almost pulled level with an acrobatic volley from Tenagalia from close range.
Deportivo Alaves had a series of half chances but nothing that would overly test Leo Roman afterwards as we headed into the break with a slender advantage.
The second half would not start as we had hoped as after continued pressure, Toni Martinez levelled matters in the 56th minute when he climbed highest from a corner to head home.
Sergi Darder would try his luck from the edge of the box following a loose ball in the box, but our midfielder’s effort was comfortably saved.
The game was turned on its head with 21 minutes remaining as Toni Martinez’s strike took a heavy deflection and ended up in the back of the next.
We fought desperately to equalise in the time left on the clock, but we were unable to find the back of the net as we headed home empty handed.
