How are you feeling and how are you approaching this new challenge in your career?
I’m really pleased to be here and to be embarking on a new challenge in my career. I’ve been lucky enough to have had a wonderful career: I won the Europa League with Sevilla, the Champions League with Liverpool, the Europa League with Villarreal and, this past year, with Como, we secured a place in the Champions League.
When they told me about the offer from RCD Mallorca, I said: 'I like this challenge of being able to take RCD Mallorca to where it deserves to be, which is the top flight'. I’m convinced it’s going to be incredibly rewarding and I’m here to help the team in any way I can, to contribute both on and off the pitch and to take RCD Mallorca to the top flight.
I understand that, of all the options you may have had once your time at Como came to an end, the project offered to you by Mallorca is the one that has appealed to you.
Yes, the main factor was the project. But RCD Mallorca have also made a huge effort to bring me here, and I’ve really appreciated that. It’s mainly the project that’s brought me here – to feel that desire to achieve things with a club once again. And here I am. Ready and raring to get started.
Your career speaks for itself. You’re a highly experienced player who’s played for top clubs. What do you think you can bring to RCD Mallorca?
Good football and a wealth of experience. I’m a very humble, cheerful person. I like to help all my team-mates and on the pitch I’m an attacking player, with good ball control and a hard worker. So I hope to help my team-mates, enjoy my time here, keep the dressing room united and, together with the fans, I believe the goal that the club and everyone here in Mallorca has in mind is the same: to be in the top flight. And we’re going all out.
How did your first meeting with Luis García go?
I spoke to him two days ago and it went very well. He told me a bit about how they play and his philosophy, and I like it because it’s a style that’s all about taking control of the game, keeping possession, pressing and dictating the pace of the match. So I’m really looking forward to starting training, following his instructions and getting into the rhythm as soon as possible.
What are you hoping for this season, particularly as a team?
The main thing is the club’s objective, which is to get RCD Mallorca back where it belongs: in the First Division. After that, it’s about having the best possible season, ensuring the dressing room stays united and the supporters stay united. We’re going to give it our all on the pitch, but without the supporters it’ll be harder. So, if we’re all united, it’ll make things easier day by day and, above all, in the matches, and it’ll help us achieve our goal.
Today you’ll be just another fan in front of the telly cheering them on, won’t you?
Of course I will. I’m catching a flight this afternoon, but as soon as I get home I’ll sit on the sofa and cheer them on just like everyone else. If I can take this shirt (the home kit) with me, all the better – that way I can cheer them on wearing the shirt.
