Vicente Moreno: “I’m very happy for the victory, not just because it’s our first in La Liga”

Vicente Moreno says he won’t forget RCD Mallorca’s 2-1 victory against SD Eibar having marked his first game as manager of a La Liga side with three points.

Dani Rodríguez’s early strike and an own goal by Paulo Oliveira gave Los Bermellones the victory at San Moix, a stadium which was also the host for the 44-year-old’s first appearance as a professional player over 20 years ago.

“That day I didn’t have any luck with the result,” he told journalists at the post-match press conference. “Today I leave here with a victory - it’s a beautiful memory for me.

“It’s difficult to summarise the Primera División. We feel immense happiness, but it wasn’t without suffering a lot. However, we deserved the win as we were better than SD Eibar in general.

Now entering his third season as manager of RCD Mallorca, Moreno believes it is a plus to be working with the same players who have grown accustomed to his methods.

“It’s an advantage to start the season with the same players from the previous year. They left everything on the pitch, but let’s not forget the support we got from the stands. We are satisfied and proud of both the players and the fans.

“We have seven players still in the team that were in the original Segunda B squad and today they have been on the field of play in a La Liga game. I’m especially happy for Xisco Campos that returned to the Primera División with his team - that’s a beautiful story.

“The squad deserves to enjoy what can happen in this division, but we have only added three points. The players are grateful for this opportunity.”
