An 83rd minute strike from Martin Ødegaard consigned RCD Mallorca to their first defeat of the La Liga season at Son Moix on Sunday evening.
Both sides struggled to find their rhythm in the opening exchanges as an early header from Lago Junior proved to the only real chance of the game after 20 minutes.
Ødegaard later managed to wriggle his way past Lumor on the flank but his dangerous cross was pounced upon by Manolo Reina.
With a majority of RCD Mallorca’s first half consisting of neat interchanges in the final third to little avail, La Real looked to utilise counter-attacking opportunities – one of which almost paid off in the 41st minute when Mikel Oyarzabal headed wide at the near post.
The winger then gave the hosts yet another late scare moments before the break when he burst through one-on-one, but the Reina managed to tip his placed effort onto the post before gathering the loose ball.
Proceedings continued its embattled tone following half-time until Aleix Febas showcased his quick feet to make room for a shot - much to the delight of the 18,166 fans watching – although his low drive to the left was thwarted by former RCD Mallorca goalkeeper Miguel Moyá.
As proceedings began to became more open, chances soon followed; the most notable being Oyarzabal racing past his marker and delivering a stinging shot which Reina did well to save.
Typical of the ebb-and-flow of the match, the woodwork was to prevent the deadlock being broken for a second time as Lumor’s curling effort caught Moyá out of position but rebounded off the post in the 78th minute.
Seven minutes from time Ødegaard dealt a fatal blow to RCD Mallorca’s chances of a merited point when a swift counter-attack and composed finish in the box resulted in the only goal of the game despite late efforts from Salva Sevilla and Pablo Chavarría.
A defeat leaves the Los Bermellones with three points from their first two fixtures following the opening-day win against SD Eibar, but will look to recapture their form away at Valencia this weekend.
