RCD Mallorca presents “La que pudo ser” at Madrid Fashion Week

The club reveals its new retro kit which revisits 'what could have been'

RCD Mallorca has joined the retro campaign launched by LaLiga, an initiative involving 38 Spanish football clubs that pays tribute to the history, culture and style that have defined different eras of the sport.

Following its presentation at Madrid Fashion Week, the club has unveiled “La que pudo ser” ('what might have been'), a concept that underpins the audiovisual campaign for the new retro shirt through a fictionalised story starring two of the greatest goalscorers in its history: Samuel Eto’o and Vedat Muriqi.

The story begins with the confession of a former Nike executive from the early 2000s, whose main objective was to kit out the Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o following his brilliant performance in the Copa del Rey final played in Elche in 2003.

To this end, he planned a deal with the club that included the launch of a shirt inspired by the Total 90 range, which was just beginning to take shape at the time and would eventually become a global icon.

However, that idea never came to fruition. Today, years later, RCD Mallorca is reviving that concept — one of many left on the back burner by executives at major multinationals — and bringing it to life. Its implementation comes courtesy of his successor, at a time when the club is kitted out by Nike thanks to its agreement with Fútbol Emotion.

Vedat Muriqi, who is just two goals away from equalling RCD Mallorca’s all-time LaLiga goalscoring record (52), will be one of the players to wear this Total 90 shirt during the retro matchday, in the fixture against Rayo Vallecano at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix (matchday 31).

Through this initiative, the club brings together football, history and fashion, highlighting the role of shirts as cultural symbols capable of representing eras, emotions and communities.

Exclusive limited edition of 1,000 shirts, now available

The presentation in Madrid featured two figures linked to the club’s history: Paco Colombás, musician, DJ and son of the legendary supporters’ club member Paco Colombás, one of the founders of the Peña Arrabal, and Maria Tugores, daughter of Toni Tugores, the pitch marshal for first-team matches at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix.

The campaign is rounded off with a series of audiovisual pieces under the #LaQuePudoSer concept. The first recreates the shirt the club might have worn in 2004 but which never came to be, whilst the second transports the viewer back to the football culture of the early 2000s, featuring Mallorcan Antonio Sánchez in a setting inspired by that era and showcasing the Total 90 aesthetic.

The shirt, of which 1,000 units have been produced, is now available online shop and can be purchased at the official shops (Estadi Mallorca Son Moix and the Cort shop) from tomorrow at 10:00 am.

With this initiative, RCD Mallorca joins LaLiga’s collective celebration, demonstrating that football history is also built on the paths that were never taken.

Because, sometimes, the most fascinating stories are precisely those that could not be.
