Match Report: RCD Mallorca 2-1 RCD Espanyol

Los bermellones are through to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey

We booked our place in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-1 win over RCD Espanyol courtesy of goals from Take Kubo and Abdón Prats.

Luis García Plaza made six changes to the side which lost 2-0 to Levante UD a week ago. Salva Sevilla replaced Rodrigo Battaglia in midfield and Amath's return to the starting XI were the most notable rotations.

Chances were few and far between during the opening exchanges as both sides failed to create anything more than a handful of half chances.

Those in attendance had to wait until the half-hour mark until we had a sight at goal, although Kubo made the most of it with a wonderfully curled free-kick from the edge of the box that sailed into the bottom corner.

The goal did little to open the game up as we continued to probe the visitors’ defence, with former manager Vicente Moreno’s side more than happy to soak up the pressure in an attempt to hit us on the counter attack.

We headed into the dressing room come the break with a slender lead after a balanced first half.

Having applied the pressure from the restart, Abdón doubled our lead 15 minutes into the second half when he climbed highest to head home Salva Sevila’s corner.

Our joy was to be short lived as RCD Espanyol hit back two minutes later when – after a lengthy VAR review – the onside Puado reacted first to a quickly-taken free-kick and fired past Leo Roman.

While the goal set up a nervy final half-hour, we remained resolute to ensure the scoreline remained the same and we headed into the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.
