Match Report: Gimnástica Segoviana 0-2 RCD Mallorca

A brace from Ángel in extra time kickstarted our Copa del Rey campaign

Ángel’s extra-time brace saw us overcome Gimnástica Segoviana 2-0 and kickstart out Copa del Rey campaign with qualification for the next round of the tournament.

Luis García Plaza named an entirely different side to the one which drew 0-0 against Getafe on Saturday evening. Academy product Javi Llabrés was handed his senior debut, while Dominik Grief returned to action for the first time since his COVID-19 infection.

We almost got off to a dream start when Fer Niño came close to opening the scoring inside the first minute, although he was denied by the quick reflexes of Lombo.

The hosts were then awarded a penalty against the run of play, although Szymanowski’s attempted paneka was comfortably collected by Grief to ensure the scoreline remained level.

There would be few opportunities to separate the two sides prior to the break as we headed into the dressing room level.

The introductions of Ángel and Jordi Mboula breathed fresh life into the team after the restart, although it was the hosts’ who would again have the best opportunity of the second half when Nogueira fired over the bar.

The game would ultimately go to extra time as neither side were able to break the deadlock.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 93rd minute thanks to Ángel latching onto Iñigo Ruíz de Galarreta’s through ball and finding the back of the net.

Drama would then follow as Nogueira and Ruíz de Galarreta received their marching orders.

Ángel would strike again in the 108th minute to put the game beyond doubt thanks to a teasing ball from Oliván.

While we left it late, we headed back to Palma with our place in the next round of the Copa del Rey secured.
