Aleksandar Sedlar: ‘I like playing with three in defence’

The defender assessed our new system and what it is like playing alongside Martin Valjent and Antonio Raillo

Aleksandar Sedlar believes he is well suited to our new three-man defensive system.

Vicente Moreno has opted for a change in tactic following the winter break and the Serbian international says it’s a formation he has experience playing in.

“It’s not my first time,” he told Play Red. “For me, I like to play with three defenders because there’s more space in the middle. You always have two or three options to pass the ball and if you ask me, with three defenders it’s a more offensive formation so I like it. In my position, the central defender in the middle, you sometimes have space but sometimes they close you so you need to pass to the side. Sometimes you can go forward with the ball and make space for other players.”

Playing alongside Martin Valjent and Antonio Raillo in a three-man defence, the 28-year-old is right at home between two experienced players.

“Martin Valjent is a great player,” he began. “For me, every game he is at a top level. I hope he will have a bit career and he’s a great guy and a great player, [Antonio] Raillo also. Two top defenders, I’m happy to play with these guys. It’s very important to speak a lot in defence. For example, my position and also as central defender, we need to speak a lot. We look good, and we will see in the next games if the coach will decide to play with three or with four. We feel good and strong.

With an important six months ahead of the team both domestically and in the Copa del Rey, Sedlar says there is enough quality in the side to make this season a success.

“I believe in this team and I believe in this idea: how we work, how we train and how we play also. It will be hard for sure, this league is very tough, every game is tough and every team is good. We need to work hard and just continue the same way.”
