RCD Mallorca end Real Madrid’s unbeaten start with a memorable 1-0 victory

Los Bermellones put the league leaders to the sword in front of a packed-out Son Moix courtesy of Lago Junior’s curled effort

Lago Junior’s first-half strike ended Real Madrid’s unbeaten start to the La Liga season as RCD Mallorca recorded a memorable 1-0 victory at Son Moix.

Billed as a David versus Goliath epic during the week’s earlier build-up, the proverbial first stone was cast by the winger when he raced past Álvaro Odriozola, cut inside and found the bottom corner just seven minutes into the match.

Celebrations of biblical proportions had yet to calm come the 14th minute as a matter of inches and an offside flag separated Ante Budimir’s well-taken volley from doubling the lead.

Amongst the deafening sold-out crowd of Son Moix was a homecoming for Marco Asensio, although you could have heard a pin drop when his team-mate Karim Benzema managed to get a toe on a deep cross which looped onto the crossbar and away from danger.

The hosts held on to see out the first half with a slender advantage having kept increasing pressure from Real Madrid at bay courtesy of some solid defending.

As time ebbed away from an embattled second half firmly locked in midfield, proceedings further swung in RCD Mallorca’s favour as Odriozola received his marching orders for a second bookable offence with 15 minutes to go.

In keeping with pre-match narrative, the only strike of the game proved to be the killer blow as Real Madrid were deservedly beaten at the hands of a fine Los Bermellones performance.
